Hi all,

I am looking for ideas for my 1983 "Spider" refurb....color ideas etc. So I thought I would ask those with earlier models if they had any pics or ideas on how to spruce it up.....you like blast it clean and leave it with the metal finish, paint it glossy black, or my current flirtation.....paint or powdercoat the body black and the arms the colors of the German flag, etc.

So if you have any ideas or pics please post to get my creative juices going.....

BTW - my vacuum lines are yellow silicone and plug wires Red. So you see I already have a little color going.

Thanks!

I went with a simple polish by an enthusiast back in the day, Dave Schaeffer and 928 Metalworks.

I love the polished look but I think if you don't clear coat it then it won't last... it will oxidize IIRC.

On my '84, I've had the thought of doing the center section in the same color as the exterior of the car and leaving the emblem silver. Then maybe do the runners in black?? Not sure yet. I haven't made up my mind either.

The coolest one I have seen was a "black chrome" powder coated one done locally then sold to an attorney, I believe, out on the left coast. It had been smoothed before powder coating and it was awesome!

The very best thing you can EVER do to your spider intake is to have it powder-coated! I did it in silver. DON'T do anything else! It will look FAKE-

[It is your car, of course...]

I had mine done about 5 years ago and it looks SO MUCH BETTER! I'm anal about keeping the engine clean, and this has saved me a LOT of work!

Red plug wires are OK, but stay away from colored silicone vacuum tubes; That looks cheesy-

I have already found a powder coating place that appears to do very good work for decent $$$

Thanks for the advice! Yeah the yellow came from it being so drab when I first got it and one of the first things I did was fix the A/C and vacuum issues. Once I get more good color in there I can make a better decision on that. I colored it initially because I wanted to see what was vacuum at a glance, while we brought it into shape.

What is the consensus on the strut tie bar being silver versus black?

I think I would put it back as black, especially if I did the whole Spider silver. That Silver PC looks good though nice job!

I have seen a Carbon Fiber one that looks good too.

Hold On - where did you get the new Gold Emblem? Is that 4 inch? I would like to do Gold whatever I choose for the Spider itself

I am going to attempt to polish my strut tie bar, the black paint is almost entirely flaked off mine. I think it would look really sharp as polished aluminum. I am powder coating the intake and other stuff I can, and they will be silver vein like Dwayne's 87. I'd powder coat the tie bar, but it is about two inches too much for my oven.

I am leaning towards all silver powder coat...you are right, the multi-color thing is too kitschy.....

I will paint the crossbar black though. For the Cam towers I am just going to blast them and clear coat them, you cannot see them on on 83 anyway once they are back in the car....!

I have one waiting to go in one of my cars (probably my '81...I don't think it is the same as for the CIS cars and I certainly wouldn't put it in BLU82) and it has the black legs (actually maybe they are dark gray... I have not taken the thing out of the box in FOREVER!) and silver body. Would look good in the '81.

Ducman82, your set up looks AWESOME! What is the crankcase vent system you are using? Also is that S/Ced or something or did you just move all the filter stuff up front for easier access and perhaps a cleaner look towards the back of the engine bay?

This is the Euro spider for my boat engine.

A little grinding on the seams, then a simple silver powder coat. I painted the emblem red to match the cam covers and added a set of new stainless clamps.

Went to the powdercoaters today. They do good work and are easy to work with. After some discussions we came up with what should be a combination that should "pop" well when you open the hood. We are doing the legs in a red that has gold metal flakes in it, then the center with be a metallic silver and I will buy a Gold replacement emblem. This should pull it together and play off the red and yellow wires and tubes I have in the engine bay already.

It will take 3 baking cycles. Because my parts are cast aluminum they need to be out-gased and coated and baked with a solution to pull the oil and contaminents from underneath the top layer, otherwise when he bakes it it will pull small flecks of black up into the finish. But they do all the cleaning an blasting needed included. Hopefully will have pics next week!

I have a complete K-Jet intake manifold that has had the parting seams of the casting carefully removed from each leg and the plenum. It was bead blasted after it was finished, and it has a Porsche hood badge placed on the body.

Needs a little cleanup is all and can be installed as-is (satin finish) or ready to paint.

It would save you the time and effort removing those parting lines before your paint or polish project.

Ok boys - just got it back, will get the full effect when the badge is in and I have them connected up ....but here goes. We went with a Metallic grey on the body to go with the current paint as well as with Meteor Grey Metallic if I ever get it painted. The Red arms have a metallic gold-ish flake in them I am afraid you won;t see in these pics....but especially under light or in Sun they are awesome. Same for the Metallic grey.

Oh - and for the plastic tubing and filter box, I cleaned it well and then used a couple of coats of Rustoleum Universal spray paint followed by a couple coats of Rustoleum gloss clear. I taped the bendy parts so they are still black, just clean. The Finished parts are called Carbon Mist.... a very nice metallic color. Looks like metal without looking fake. I used painting tape for the Yellow and blue info stickers on the filter box to give it that original look.

The S3 intake is easy! There is a good writeup in the Tech Library for the S3 intake refresh, provided by Mike Frye. I can do one in a weekend now including refinishing the intake and valve covers. The valve covers are difficult to r&r with the engine in the car, but it is doable with patience.

Michael, the parts look awesome! Looking forward to seeing the finished product on the engine!

I stripped my cross bar and polished up and it looked great, until I put it against the engine. It just didn't look right to me, so I painted it satin black.

I like the original color of my intake. I'm thinking about painting the letters though.
