New owner in South Africa was created by benjack
Hi all.
Great to finally feel OK to post here.
I joined 928oc a few years ago. This seemed the best place to look for and find info.
Many thanks to Rich for the support (and 928 themed gift every year I renewed my membership!) and very positive feedback over the years.
So I've now bought a 1979, and against all the good advice - it is not the "best" car I could afford.
It was however close by, looked tidy in the photos, and owner was upfront about everything that didnt work.
Turns out almost "everything doesn't work". :-)
I live and work outside of South Africa, and return to visit familt 4 or 5 times per year. So this is going to be an interesting project.
I've now driven the car - and it goes really well. Booked it into our local AutoElectrician for Tuesday morning.
And it decided to "sop working" half way there.
So now "everyhing doesn't work".
I'm happy as when we towed it into the AutoElectrician, Ishmal walked over and said he's going to fix this one.
(he did some work on my 1979 Fiat 131 - and seems to know his way around old electrics.)
Good news so far:
I own a 928. Woo hoo!
Car starts and runs. (it was the fuel pump relay that failed.)
Instrument cluster is fixed. And everything works. (except for volt meter.)
Relays are either ok, or being sent out to be fixed.
All the lights work.
Windows have been fixed and work.
Mirrors should be fixed by end of today. (today is day 4 at the AutoElectrician.)
Next up:
Airconditioning.

Unfortunately I'm now on my way back to work overseas.
Hopefully we can have "everything" fixed by the time I return.

Hello Benjack,

I'm glad to hear you made it home to drive your "new" Porsche 928 (after your daughter did).  It sounds like you have the common problems of an older German car.  It is good that you have a mechanic that can correct these problems.  Many automotive technicians are younger than your 928 and aren't familiar with how things were done in the old days.

I do recommend that anyone driving a Porsche 928 should replace these relays: fuel pump (all cars), fuel injection (from 1980 and newer) and spark (from 1984 Euro/1985US & newer)  ... they are one of the most common problems and are a wear item after a few decades.

Rich
Thank you for the positive comments.
The car was dropped off by the Auto Electricians 6 weeks ago. Everything works!
But, Dad started the 928 last week, warmed up everything turned it off to go into the house to get his hat - got back in, and it wouldn't start.
Seems the car is in love with someone at the auto electrical shop. :-)
Feedback - the radio is draining the battery (faster than the trickle charger can top up) so they've changed it onto a switched circuit to stop it drawing power.
Good news is I'll be back in country next week, and the car will be ready to drive.
First stop is at a guy who has 2nd-hand 928 spares to get some relays and other bits and pieces.
I'm sooo looking forward to this trip home.
All the best
